Editoriale: Clarendon Press - Oxford

Anno di pubblicazione: 1992

The first volume of this work comprises a comprehensive view of Elisabethan lute music, 1558-94, its sources, repertoire, forms, and stylistic development, and concludes with an essay on John Johnson, the first of the so-called "Golden Age" lutenist-composers enough of whose works survive to reveal a musical person and an important one.

The second volume contains transcriptions of the most of the pieces discussed in the first volume, including a number that belong to the history of popular and court ballad singing, and to the pre-history of the lutenist ayre.
